What is the course about?


This is a two year advanced level course which will give you the opportunity to develop your own interests in and understanding of Art and Design.

To qualify for the National Certificate you will need to successfully achieve twelve units of study and for the National Diploma you will need to successfully achieve eighteen units of study.

Which skills and/experience would be useful or essential?
Students studying for the Diploma (eighteen units) will have a minimum of four GCSE passes at grade C or above, including English Language and Mathematics or an appropriate BTEC First Diploma, or an appropriate GNVQ Intermediate (merit grade).
Students without grade C or above in English or Mathematics will be expected to resit or study further in those subjects and will study for the National Certificate (twelve units).

You will need to attend an interview and bring with you a portfolio of your recent art and design work.
How will you learn and be assessed?
Through studio-directed projects and practical assignments you will explore a wide range of disciplines and areas:
  • Creative ability, to promote enquiry and to produce experimental work that reflects your own ideas.
  • Your work will be regularly assessed and some assessments will be external.
What opportunities are available to you?
The International Artist in Residence Programme, together with educational visits to both London and Paris will help you to develop a more in-depth understanding of both historical and contemporary references within the subject.
