Advice and Guidance
Helping you with your choices
We understand how important it is to provide the right support throughout year 11 to help you make a post-16 choice that you are happy with. The following section might help you with some queries that you might have.
Before making your post-16 choice, it is important to research your ideas thoroughly. A useful resource is the CLIPS online service available through the main careers website - www.careers.gg. This A-Z guide will provide you with lots of information on jobs and careers that may interest you (including entry requirements, tasks involved, levels of pay etc).
It is also important to make use other resources such as the internet, family and friends, teachers, work experience, careers libraries and computer guidance (e.g. KUDOS).
Year 11 students interested in leaving full-time education should also take a look at the Apprenticeships and Employment sections of the post-16 moving on site. If you are planning to continue in full-time learning, you will need to complete an application form. This will be given to you at school by your careers teacher and needs to be handed in before the application deadline of March 12th 2010. You will also have an interview with the Sixth Form Centre or College of FE. Once they have seen your application form, and if they make you an offer of a place, you will need to wait until your final GCSE results come out in August to confirm your place.
A full list of key dates is available on the Open Days and Events section of this site.
Next Step PlanBefore you have to decide on your plans, you should have the opportunity to complete a Next Step plan at school. You will normally complete your Next Step plan with tutors or your careers teacher at school in the autumn term. This multiple choice questionnaire will help to identify the levels of support you might need with your post-16 choices. Students should have the opportunity to review their Next Step plans in the New Year before making a final decision on the choices available after year 11. Ask your Careers teacher if you require more information on how the Next Step plan works.

The Careers Service is based at the Education Department and is responsible for providing impartial information, advice and guidance to young people from year 9 up to the age of 21. The Careers Advisers at the Careers Service work with each school to support students. If you feel you need any support with your post-16 choice you can contact your careers teacher who will be happy to arrange a discussion with an adviser. You can also contact the Careers Service directly if you prefer. The contact details below also provide information about which adviser is currently working with your school.
